My life in dreams

Does a smoothie a day keep the wrinkles away?

A few months ago I came across some You Tube videos about raw veganism. I was bored, and must admit that I enjoyed watching them and now I am hooked. I have been following the videos of the various “gurus” and I have learned a lot. I never thought You Tube could be such a valuable source of information, although I must warn you to always do your research to back up what you see on there.

Watching these videos have made me give this lifestyle a chance, since it is known to be nutritious and healthy for our bodies. Also since I have nothing better to do and could use to lose some weight anyway, I decided to give it a try. I must admit that in my first attempt I went a little crazy and decided to go full force raw vegan. The result: I was starved and binged LOL. Fruits digest very quickly, even if you eat tons of them. So I decided that I needed to take things rather slow with this new lifestyle until I get used to it. I needed to be patient with myself, being that I am not vegetarian or vegan to begin with. So I have committed to adding at least a couple of pieces of fruit to my diet a day. Granted this should be happening anyway, but I will admit that my diet has been very poor in recent years.

To aid in this new lifestyle, I did some research online and discovered the book The 80/10/10 Diet by Dr. Graham. The book basically tells the dieter to eat raw fruits, nuts and seeds. It is a low-fat, raw vegan diet. So that is what I would like to be eating at least 50% of the time. That is my goal for now and then I can see how I feel about going 100% .

But for now I am adding green smoothies to my breakfasts and adding some more fruits as snacks. I am still consuming cooked foods and some meats like chicken, but I have cut down drastically my dairy and red meat.

I will say that before consuming my daily green smoothie I was, and still am, an acne sufferer. I have dealt with this condition for a long time and it has never really went away.

After drinking my smoothies, my skin has cleared substantially and it also has a very nice glow to it. So I want to keep drinking these smoothies for a few more months to see if maybe I can avoid wrinkles too 🙂  Hey! I am 30 so I have to start thinking about these things.

Anyway, I wanted to share some smoothies I have made recently along with their pictures. If you know of any other smoothie recipes or would like to share how someone can be successful with this diet, please share!!!

So the first smoothie I made consisted of organic baby spinach, bananas, strawberries, mango and water. It was really good, but if you like your smoothies really cold add some ice. The other smoothie consisted of frozen berries (no sugar added), baby spinach, bananas, a little flaxseed oil to curve the hunger, some lemon and water. This is my favorite smoothie thus far because of the lemon in it. I am not a fan of things that are too sweet, and fruits are sweet. So I add lemon. You can add the lemon little by little until you get the taste you desire.

Help! I Married A Vampire.

Finally I get to blog! I have been trying to spend as much time as possible with my husband, since he is leaving me soon to go on deployment 😦

On better news, we both went to out local natural food store to get some advice on being more healthy and to help us lean towards a healthier diet. While there, we decided to get checked by a holistic doctor. Nothing major was done during our checkups. The practitioner has an electronic scanner called “The Compass” that tells you what deficiencies you may have, and based on the results the doctor recommends vitamins and supplements that you should be taking. Interestingly enough, my results came out “chinese” and my husband’s was “garlic“. I wish I was making this up, but that is the honest truth. Apparently, I am in dire need of chinese herbs and supplements, and my husband is in dire need of garlic. Yikes! I married a vampire!!!

So in order to get rid of his vampire tendencies, I must fill my pantry with good-old raw garlic.

I have not started my chinese supplementation, but I have started taking a multi-vitamin and I am feeling a lot more energized. We have also started to make some dietary changes, although we are both terrified of… TOFU. This square looking soy product has become the boogie monster in my home.

Everyday the tofu stares at us from the fridge and we just can’t seem to have the courage to actually cook it. We are a bit skeptical of the taste or how it is going to turn out. But, I do know that we both need to consume less animal products and try for more vegan/vegetarian options. Thus far, we have conquered regular butter and substituted it for Smart Balance, we are eating our fruits…the meat to veggie substitution is not working so well. Eventually we will gather the courage to conquer our fears and come up with a way of cooking this tofu thing from vegan heaven. We will also try to find a way to enjoy more green veggies.

Unfortunately, that day will not be today 😦

If anyone has suggestions on how to go more vegan/vegetarian or recipe ideas, please leave a comment.
